Jon Hanna 2 Years On

11/3/2021

It is been 2 years since our world became a bit darker with the loss of our friend and co-volunteer Jon Hanna, and to be honest a lot of us are still trying to find our feet after such a loss.

Jon Hanna was an amazing person, father, friend and activist.

He grew up in the North during The Troubles, seeing his mother hiding at home people from both sides and learned since early that was important to do what you believed right, even when it was hard. And, unfortunately, a lot of it was hard.

Jon always did what he believed was right. He did so much good on this world, we just couldn't fit it all in one post. He fought fiercely for Repealing the 8th even when it was barely a concept. He was part of the 1st bisexual associations in Ireland, and a core part of Bi+ Ireland.

Unfortunately, the hard times weren't just political. Jon had a lot of his own personal demons and struggles and he shared them openly. This opened a door for many other of us to recognise and share our own, knowing we always had his love and support. He was as quick with a listening ear as he was with a banner at a protest. Jon was always there to support people, his friends and online communities, whether that was offering a helpful answer or providing a non judgmental conversation. Jon enriched all our lives. He was an honest and open soul who did not fear being corrected but would instead thank you for widening his knowledge.

We owe him so much that we are still filled with grief.

But if we learn something from Jon, is that what we owe him the most is taking care of ourselves and each other and keeping up the good fight.

We are still fighting, Jon, and you will never be forgotten.

Rest in Power.

One Year Since In Person Meet

8/3/2021

Today marks one year since the last Bi+ Ireland event we have had in person. This has been a tough year for all our volunteers and members. But still we persevere. Throughout the year, Bi+ Ireland members and volunteers helped each other through the often isolating days. It was near the very start of the pandemic that we launched our Discord channel, between this and our community Facebook group, there was/ is chats to be have on a daily basis. Our incredible volunteer, Irene, along with the occasional other volunteers, has helped provide a space for our members (and volunteers) to vent every Monday by modding a mental health checking post in our community Facebook group. Although, we can't see each other in person, that hasn't stopped us from meeting virtually over Zoom. In the past year Bi+ Ireland volunteer Cír has hosted 17 zoom events, with 2 more happening in the next week.

These are just some of the examples of how the Bi+ Ireland community stayed connected in a year with no face to face meet ups. And we want to take this moment to thank every one of our members and volunteers for keeping our community striving through a dark time in our shared history.

We are looking forward to the day we can see each other again in person, but until then, us volunteers will take solace in the fact that our members make up a wonderful accepting community. We will continue to provide online spaces, even when in person meetings are allowed, as we know the value in remaining connected to all of our members but especially those who may be more isolated than others.

So stay safe and know Bi+ Ireland is here for you.

International Women's Day 2021

8/3/2021

The 8th of March marks International Women's Day, and in Bi+ Ireland we would like to mark the occasion by thanking all the amazing women that fought so hard to change the world, from the Women Vote to Pride and any other conquests. With all our heart, thank you. To any of you that get up today and fight another day against an imbalanced system that damages all genders, thank you. To any of you that make it through the day despite it, THANK YOU.

Here in Bi+ Ireland we fully recognise that all women are valid and beautiful. This includes of course transgender women and intersex women. Your experiences and lives enhance and enrich our shared history every day.

We also recognise that so many of us that don’t identify as women still face misogyny based discrimination. For those non-binary, agender and everyone else who is not a woman but finds themselves in a world that treats them as a woman or feels culturally aligned with the experiences of women: we see you. We understand that today may bring complicated feelings for you. Please know this you have a place in IWD, if it's you where your heart feels comfortable today.

There is still SO much to do, but we believe that together we are stronger and everyone that identifies as a woman as a political class is welcome to our fight ❤

Keep it up, and remember self-care is also an act to rebellion.

PictureBackground textured almost like felt, the colours are pink, purple and blue. On the left-hand side of the graphic are the words “Online Bi+ Ireland Meetup Bi+ Conversations on Zoom Saturday 13th March 2021 at 5pm - 7pm. Don’t forget to sign up.” On the right-hand side is the outline of a laptop, phone and headphones. On the laptop screen is a bi+ heart. On the phone's screen is a pan+ heart.

Welcome to Online Bi+ Ireland Meetup - Bi+ Conversations on Saturday 13th March at 5pm. For privacy reasons we ask you to fill out this form if you wish to participate. On the day, we will send you an email containing the link and password to join the meetup, if you don’t receive it by 12pm please pm us.

We invite you to join us for an open discussion of bi+ topics such as Bi+ representation in the media, bi+ erasure, the even more erased members of our community.

Whether you have only recently discovered your bi+ ness or you have known you are panromantic for decades, we believe everyone in our community has a voice worthy to be heard.

This event will happen slightly earlier in the day compared to our previous Zoom calls to allow for self-care afterwards for those that need it after engaging in potentially heavy topics.

What to Expect from a Bi+ Ireland Zoom
Whatever you feel most comfortable doing, is what you should be doing. This zoom, like all Bi+ Ireland events, is there for the enjoyment and comfort of our members and that means different things to different members but each is valid.

Like always our meet-ups are open to all adults under the Bi+ Umbrella and their friends, partners, carers etc.
If multiple people from the same household are participating, you could all, of course, join us on the one video call.

First time going to a Bi+ Ireland Meetup? Not yet a member of our lovely online community group? Feel free to send us a message and our volunteers can add you to the group and look out for you on the day.

For the purpose of this event, we will be hosting over Zoom.
We will be using a paid version of Zoom so there is end-to-end encryption on the call. A link to the zoom meeting and its password will be sent on the day. You are not required to download Zoom onto any device as you can access the meeting through any web browser. Nor do you have to sign up to zoom.

Important to Note
  • Saturday 13th March 2021
    • Starting at 5pm. Finishing at 7pm.
  • Like all Bi+ Ireland events, this event puts consent first and foremost, you can choose if you have your mic and camera on or not, at any point.
    • You can type comments as well/ instead of using your voice .
  • If you are running late, don’t worry pop into the call whenever you are free. Likewise, feel free to leave at any stage. Whether you are there for 5 minutes or the entire event, we will be happy to know you were there.
  • Feel free to work away on crafts, knitting, colouring or such, if you like to keep your hands busy as you talk.
  • If possible please wear headphones with a mic. This helps improve audio and reduces the amount of feedback in the call.
  • You can have a public chat in the chat function, but no private messaging anyone
    • Please note, there will be Bi+ Ireland volunteers keeping an eye on the chat.
  • Please use "content notices" if you are about to talk about sensitive or potentially triggering topics.
    • If you're talking about a situation that is sensitive for you it might be helpful if you clearly say if you're looking for sympathy or if you're looking for solutions - but you don't have to do that .
  • In the interest of consensual interactions we are implementing a "badge" policy, which we learnt from another group.
Just rename yourself to include the first letter of the colour badge you feel is appropriate.
Eg: G -Alex, O - Aaron, R - Eliza,
  • Green (G) means I'd like to interact so please chat with me & I might not speak out myself.
  • Orange (O) means prior permission - I only want to interact with people whom I've given permission.
  • Red means - (R) I'm here, but not up for any kind of interaction
  • No colour means you'll manage things as they come .
  • You can change badges/ colour things many times during a conversation but just remember it might take others a few seconds to notice.
  • Volunteers will have a V badge
  • This is a Bi+ Ireland event and as such our guidelines are in play. Remember to respect each other, act in good faith and know that no racism, sexism or lgbt-phobia will be tolerated.

Online Bi+ Ireland Meetup - Playing JackBox Games on Zoom will take place on Saturday 20th February 2021 at 8pm. For privacy reasons we ask you to fill out this form if you wish to participate. On the day, we will send you an email containing the link and password to join the meetup, if you don’t receive it by midday please pm us.

And if games aren’t your thing, you are free to join just for the chats, or keep an eye here for future non gaming sessions.

For the purpose of this event, we will be using Jackbox.tv. Each player must have individual access to Jackbox.tv. It does not require an app download or any sign-up. Simply this allows you to select your answers from your device. If multiple people from the same household are participating, you could all, of course, join us on the one video call.. Additionally, each player must have access to a device so that they can input their answers using Jackbox.tv. While it is possible to navigate both Zoom and Jackbox from the same device, it is not ideal.

Important to Note
  • Saturday 20th February 2021
    • Starting at 8pm. Finishing at 9pm.
  • For the best experience please have 2 devices on hand.  One device for the Zoom call. One device on Jackbox.tv to answer the questions. Neither Zoom or Jackbox requires signup or download.
    • If you only have one device, fear not. Many handheld devices offer split screen view options. Another option is to jump between Zoom and Jackbox when you wish to.
  • Like all Bi+ Ireland events, this event puts consent first and foremost, you can choose if you have your mic and camera on or not, at any point.

Bi+ Ireland Zoom Book Club - March 2021

Welcome to the Bi+ Ireland book club on Saturday 6th March at 8pm. For privacy reasons we ask you to fill out this form if you wish to participate. On the day, we will send you an email containing the link and password to join the meetup, if you don’t receive it by 12pm please pm us.

What is the Bi+ Ireland Book Club?
This is a non-traditional book club.

The aim is to have a monthly video call on the first Saturday of each month. Each month members will be invited to come on the call and talk about books, etc they have read that month or in the process of reading: even if you want to bring along an old favourite book. We can talk about the topic of the book, what we like about the book, dislike, would we recommend it? All from another a non-spoiler context unless the group on the day in question have no problem having spoilers.

We can discuss whatever our reading habits happen to be: non-fiction, fiction, YA, Autistic books, fanfics, etc

This method means people aren’t under pressure to buy or borrow a specific book. They aren’t under pressure to read a set amount in a month. They aren’t under pressure to read something they don’t like. We all get to widen our literary knowledge by hearing what others are reading.

In between zooms we can talk books over at our discord. If you like to join our discord please pm Bi+ Ireland
